  • Why me?

With numerous tours and guides in Edinburgh to choose from I've listed 3 things below which are important to me
    1

    Keeping It Real

Nothing annoys me more than automated responses and not being able to get hold of a real person. That is why, when I started my business, I made a promise to myself not to do that...despite all the marketing and sales advice that tells me other wise.

So, on my website, you won't find any sales funnels, pop-up windows, requests to subscribe for 10% off, or automated responses to enquiries.

If you book with me you can rest assured that every enquiry is responded to by me personally as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

    2

    Supporting Local

By booking with me you'll be supporting a small, independent, local business. In turn I'll recommend other local businesses to you - businesses that pride themselves on good quality products and services, made and delivered with care and attention.

In a world that is increasingly full of bland and insipid chain brands, this approach not only benefits the local economy it also gives a more authentic experience of the city.

Edinburgh's city centre, and its local neighbourhoods, are full of small, independent businesses that are well-worth exploring from cosy cafes and hand-made gifts to chic eateries and brilliant bookshops.

    3

    Giving Back

This city and my community supports me so I believe in supporting this city and my community.

I put aside £10.00 from every private tour I do into a 'donations kitty'. At the end of the year I divide this kitty up between some of the city's many heritage institutions. I also donate to a local charity, my chosen charity for 2023 was Steps to Hope.

Through the city councils Adult Education Programme, which provides affordable access to education, I offer local history classes to encourage residents from all backgrounds to discover more about this wonderful city we call home.

  • About Me...

    broken image

Hi! I'm Hetty. Although I've been a city dweller for almost 30 years I grew up in Orkney, a group of islands off the north coast of Scotland. A community centred around farming and fishing, life in Orkney is close to nature, I can recognise wild-flowers and hand-milk a cow - not that there's much call for that particular skill in Edinburgh! While I've been lucky enough to travel to places in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, it was my childhood in Orkney that gave me a love of landscapes and where my life-time interest in history began. With everything from Neolithic villages to Second World War navy bases it’s hard to ignore the past in Orkney.

Moving to Edinburgh in 1992 I spent 25 years working in a variety of sectors, from hospitality to higher education, before sitting my university entrance exams on my 40th birthday and becoming a student myself. I graduated with a first-class MA (Hons) in Social and Architectural History from the University of Edinburgh in 2018. With a particular interest in people, buildings and landscapes, I started Hetty's History Walks: Edinburgh Uncovered in 2019 to offer walking tours for people curious about the "how's and why's" of Edinburgh's past rather than just the "oohs and aahs" of its history as entertainment!
